Morning Rituals: Tricks to Make the Most of Your Day

My days are fairly hectic. Besides waking up at a God forsaken 7:30 a.m. to begin my routine, there’s always some unexpected stressors that manage to creep their way in. I’ll share with you my way to combat these stressors and how to make sure your day goes as smoothly as possible from the minute you open your eyes to the moment your head hits the pillow.
Waking up early is one of the hardest things to adapt to. You’re not just waking up early to make it to that 8 or 9 a.m., but to make sure you look presentable as well. I recommended waking up at least 90 minutes before your morning class so you don’t feel rushed. And don’t you dare hit snooze. For me, 90 minutes before is at 7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.
While in the shower, I begin to think about my day. This is where I begin to plan my outfit for the day. Think about who you are going to see throughout the day, if you have to present to the class, go to work, or wear something that has to seamlessly go from day-to-night.
Once out of the shower, slip into your lucky pair of underwear (that should be all of them if you’re doing it right) and gather your clothes. Since it has been abnormally warm in Champaign, I like to wear a light denim shirt over my outfit that usually consists of a basic t-shirt and dark denim. I know denim-on-denim is scary to some, but any layers that you can find that compliment your look and are versatile are viable.
After I get dressed, I put moisturizer and eye cream on. You may be wondering why eye cream is necessary, but believe me it’s the first thing to do if you don’t want to have crows feet by 23. Kiehl’s offers an extensive line of products for men and women to combat any of your skin care needs. I’m a huge fan of the Kiehl’s Facial Fuel line.
After putting on some face, I comb my hair with my fingers using Layrite Matte Styling Cream. My barber recommended this to me three years ago, and I have never gone back. It allows for movement throughout the day and will withstand almost any wind.
At this point, I make a cup of coffee, pour it in my tumbler and grab a Cliff Bar (or two) and bolt out the door.
Lately while walking to class I have been jamming Kaytranada’s new album “99.9%,” which will have you strutting like Naomi Campbell at a Versace fashion show in the ‘90s.
Throughout the day, I periodically check Google Calendar to make sure I am on time for everything, and then if I am running late, I know where to make adjustments.
In the evening, I decompress by taking an hour to myself followed by homework or studying. Once all my responsibilities have been taken care of, I see what my friends are up to, or relax over a mediocre comedy on Netflix.
